Tall Men: Stop Buying Longer Saddles. Adjust the Width Instead.

You have been told to buy a longer saddle, sit further back, and add more padding. If you are tall, none of that fixes the problem you actually have. A longer shell changes nothing about where pressure lands.

Tall riders have long femurs. That sounds obvious, but the consequences are specific. A long femur changes the angle at the hip and pushes the pelvis forward as you ride. Weight shifts off the sit bones and onto the soft tissue between them. That is where numbness starts.

Long Femurs Move the Pressure Point

When the knee sits lower relative to the hip at the top of the pedal stroke, the body often responds by rotating the pelvis forward. This rotation moves the contact point off the ischial tuberosities and toward the pubic rami and the perineum.

Think of the femur as a lever. The longer the lever, the more force a forward pelvic rotation applies to the front of the saddle. A traditional long-nose saddle only adds material in that exact zone, pressing upward into soft tissue.

What the Medical Research Says

In 2002, a group of urologists published a study in European Urology that measured penile oxygen pressure while cyclists sat on different saddle shapes. A narrow, heavily padded saddle caused an 82 percent drop in penile oxygen. A wider, noseless saddle limited the drop to about 20 percent.

The researchers concluded something direct: saddle width matters more for blood flow than padding does, and when the nose presses upward into the perineum, it compresses the nerves and arteries that feed the tissue. Later reviews reached the same point.

For a tall man who rides in a forward or aero position, this is the central issue. You need the rear width set correctly and the nose out of the way. A longer shell gives you neither.

Why "Buy a Longer Saddle" Keeps Failing

Saddle length is a red herring. Seat rail fore-aft can move the entire saddle, but shell length does not determine sit bone support. Two riders of the same height can have sit bone widths that differ by 15 millimeters or more.

Tall riders also get pushed toward softer, longer models. A soft midline sinks under your weight and pushes up into the perineum. The sit bones bottom out, the nose rises, and the numbness returns. Extra padding makes it worse.

A Width-First Fitting Sequence

Start by measuring your sit bone width. Sit on a piece of corrugated cardboard for a few seconds, measure the center-to-center distance between the two deepest indentations, then add 10 to 15 millimeters. That gives you a starting rear width.

  1. Set the BiSaddle rear width to that number.
  2. Ride for 30 minutes on a flat road and check for sit bone pressure.
  3. If you feel roll-off at the edges, widen the halves 3 to 5 millimeters at a time.
  4. If you feel pressure in the center, narrow the front gap or tilt each half slightly.
  5. Check the nose clearance in an aero or forward position. The perineum should not contact the front section.
  6. Adjust the front halves inward until soft tissue has clearance, then retighten.

This sequence uses width as the main variable. Length never enters the decision. That is the change tall riders need.

A taller body changes the moment arm at the hip. That changes where pressure lands on a saddle. The medical data point to width and nose relief as the protective variables. Saddle length does not correct either one.
