Recalibrate the Fit: Women’s Saddle Maintenance for the Bisaddle

You finish a long ride and the numbness returns. The saddle hasn't moved, so you assume the fit is unchanged. That assumption leaves out half the story.

Most saddle maintenance for women stops at wiping down the cover and checking bolts. That misses the step that prevents numbness, swelling, and hot spots: rechecking the saddle's width and angle against the rider's current sit-bone position. On a Bisaddle, this adjustment takes a hex key.

A 2023 survey of female cyclists found 35 percent had experienced vulvar swelling and nearly half reported long-term genital swelling or asymmetry. Fixed saddles contribute to those numbers. When the shape is fixed, any change in pelvic angle can move pressure onto the wrong structures.

The Bisaddle works differently. Its two halves slide closer or farther apart and pivot independently. Rear width adjusts from roughly 100 millimeters to 175 millimeters. Your Fit Changes More Than You Think

Sit-bone width itself changes little in adulthood. The effective support point changes every time you alter saddle height, handlebar drop, or cleat position. Tilt the pelvis forward by a few degrees and the part of the saddle that should carry your sit bones shifts. A width that felt right in the spring can start pressing on soft tissue after you raise the saddle for a race fit.

Hormonal changes add another layer. Fluid retention across the menstrual cycle alters tissue volume and sensitivity. Some riders find the same saddle width fine in week one and painful by week four. Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause change pelvic floor tolerance and soft tissue elasticity. A fixed saddle would need replacing each time. A Bisaddle can be re-set.

Indoor training matters too. On a trainer there are no road bumps forcing you out of the saddle, so pressure stays on the same tissue for long stretches. A width that works outdoors for hours can become uncomfortable after a short indoor session. Recalibrate before and after indoor season.

What a Bisaddle Maintenance Check Covers

Start with cleaning. Wipe the cover after sweaty rides. On the Bisaddle Saint with its 3D printed lattice, use a soft brush to lift dirt from the lattice openings, then wipe with a damp cloth. Do not soak the rails or the adjustment hardware.

Inspect the adjustment tracks for grit. The sliding halves need clean, dry rails to move smoothly. Grit can make them stick or allow them to drift under load. If a half has moved from your recorded setting, return it before the next ride.

Check the independent angle of each half. One half can tilt slightly after rough gravel or a minor knock. You will feel it as pressure on one sit bone. Re-level the halves and tighten the adjustment bolts to the torque value printed in the manual. Recheck the bolts after the first ride following any adjustment.

Record your settings. Write down the width, angle, and any notes about pressure. Saddle comfort is not stable from season to season. The settings that worked before a pregnancy or before changing to a shorter stem may not work after. Use mild soap and water for cleaning. Avoid petroleum-based solvents, which degrade the cover and foam.

A Simple Sit-Bone Measurement

A piece of cardboard on a hard chair gives you a useful measurement. Sit on the cardboard, mark the two deepest depressions, and measure the distance between centers. Set the Bisaddle rear width so the center of each half sits under each depression. This keeps weight on the ischial tuberosities instead of the perineum.

Recheck the fit after any of these changes:

  • You raised or lowered the saddle or moved the cleats.
  • You switched to shorts with a different chamois thickness.
  • You changed handlebar height or stem length.
  • You entered an indoor training block.
  • You are pregnant, postpartum, or managing pelvic floor changes.

After any change, ride a short loop and note numbness, hot spots, or one-sided pressure. Adjust in small increments. If one side feels overloaded, change the angle of only that half.

When Adjustment Should Stop

Adjustment solves most fit problems, but it cannot fix worn-out material. If the cover is cracked, the foam has compressed to the point that the shell is felt through the padding, or the lattice on the Saint has torn, replacement is the maintenance step. If the rails are bent or the adjustment bolts are stripped, stop riding until the hardware is replaced. The adjustable mechanism is a moving part. It deserves the same inspection as the rest of the bike.

Make Recalibration a Habit
